Guard Tank Valve Passes Low-Temperature Test - Guard Europe BV

Guard Tank Valve Passes Low-Temperature Test: -65 °C for 6 Hours

Good news from the test lab: the Guard tank valve has successfully passed a demanding low-temperature test. In icy environments, metals can become cold brittle: their strength and hardness increase, while their toughness and ductility decrease. This can seriously affect the safety of valves. Therefore, at a customer’s request, we had our valve tested in an independent test setup.

Why this test matters

For applications in LNG, cryogenic logistics, chemicals, and transport under Arctic/winter conditions, a tank valve must continue to operate safely at very low temperatures. With this test, we demonstrate that Guard components remain reliable even under such conditions.

Test setup (third party, witnessed by classification society)

  • Location & supervision: test performed by an independent inspection body, in the presence of engineers from a Russian classification society.

  • Standards framework: conducted in accordance with ND No. 2-09021-009-E.

  • Condition: -65 °C with 6-hour conditioning (a highly demanding scenario).

  • Focus: low-temperature behaviour of the housing, internal parts, and seals, plus functional actuation and tightness check in line with the test requirements.

  • Result: the Guard tank valve met the requirements and successfully passed the low-temperature test, as confirmed by the attending inspection party.

Images from the test process

The photos show the frost-covered components after exposure and the climate chamber in which the test took place. This illustrates the realistic and stringent conditions under which the valve was subjected to testing.

What this means for our customers

  • Reliability in the cold: proven operation at −65 °C, suitable for winter and sub-Arctic routes.

  • Safety & compliance: test conducted under third-party oversight and to recognised requirements.

  • Peace of mind in critical operations: from bulk transport to cryogenic applications—Guard valves continue to do what they are designed to do.
